Pestprooflondon use Danish and British made valves that are installed within manholes and sewer systems to stop the entry of rats.
WOULD IT BE PRODUCTIVE FOR YOU TO INSTALL ONE?
Rat valves or rat flaps use the same technology as a mechanical check valve, only allowing the rat to pass one way. The drainage system flows to a gradient and the fall gives it momentum, allowing it to pass, and then gravity closes the flap. Rats attack our valves but cannot pass through.
HOW A VALVE CAN STOP RATS
Rats live in sewers as they are safe from predators, and this allows feeding and rehydration. When we survey a property we look for droppings within the drains and then we look to see if they are entering via a broken intel or failure within the clay drain or manhole.
If you have a defect and a valve can be correctly positioned, rats can no longer pass within the drains, and accordingly not enter the house subfloor or fabric.
HOW DO RATS GET INTO BUILDINGS?
Drainage systems and pipework play a critical role in maintaining a functional home. However, drains connect to sewers and sewers contain the rat population – which like to nest within houses. Defective drains or pipework often lead to a rat infestation.
The most common points of entry in a drainage system are via:
- Built over defective drains
- Cracked clay pipes
- Uncapped inlet pipe (redundant)
- Burrows
- Party walls
- Guttering downpipes
- Wall vents
- Fascias
- Lintel bridges
CAN RATS PASS DRAIN VALVES?
Yes is the answer!
We attend multiple properties and valves are incorrectly located or the wrong type are installed. Pestprooflondon understand the limitations of rat valves and what are required and where to fit.
Pestprooflondon exchange and discard cheaper valves on failed installations.
There are many companies without drainage experience fitting inferior valves or correct valves within the wrong location. Pestprooflondon use 6 rat flat/rat valve versions, but primarily use a Nordisk VA approved valve made in Denmark.
VALVES WE DON’T USE
- Plastic rat valves can be chewed through.
- Poor hinge mechanism (Diy type Butt hinge)
- Non serrated flaps(rats will lift these flats serrations are required to stop this happening)
- Single flapped valves.
- Any valve that decreases internal flow dimensions (causes blockages)
VALVES WE DO USE
The Nordisk TX11 has been a world-leading industrial grade rat blocker for years with over 250 000 installations worldwide.
The standard TX11 has double flaps with sharp teeth, which discourage rats from trying to lift them open –They are exceptionally well engineered and are built from marine grade 316 stainless steel, non toxic with zero friction the only VA approved valve.
Perfect for UK drainage clay, plastic, cast and or any other material. Multiple valves are made with versions shorter, with a radius, locking and for lined drains. Pestprooflondon are the biggest purchaser in UK of Nordisk valves.
DO VALVES NEED SERVICING?
Nordisk recommend the valve be cleaned and checked annually. Pestprooflondon can offer this service and a maintenance program.
Blocked drains are often caused by seemingly harmless wet wipes, also fat tipped down the drain can solidify and can cause a blockage due to a build-up or ‘fat berg’. Therefore, every drain is at risk of blockage unless the waste that flows through it can be carefully controlled.
As a result, it is essential that all Rat valves/blockers are maintained at least once every year by checking and cleaning, which is also an opportunity to visually inspect the drain. Without these annual checks, there is a risk that should a blockage occur the Rat Blocker may be incorrectly blamed.
COSTS TO CLEAN AND REINSTALL A VALVE ON THE SAME SITE
Single valve cleaned and lubricated | £99 + VAT |
Two valves cleaned and lubricated | £125 + VAT |
Any additional valves after costed at | £25 + VAT (Per Valve) |
If you have an existing cheaper fitted valve we can attend and exchange for a Nordisk improving the possibility of stopping rats passing.
Installation and supply of replacement or first fitment cost:
Installation or exchange of a 100mm Nordisk TX11 valve | £399 + VAT |
Installation or exchange of a 150mm Nordisk | £499 + VAT |
Pestprooflondons guaranteed model uses valves as an important part of the process that’s gives the confidence to solve multiple rat entry jobs weekly, if you have rodent issue email or call the office and speak with a specialist and see if we can help?
Can valves installed correctly fail?
Yes, this has only happened twice, when the object was stuck holding the flaps open. A qualified drainage engineer needs to attend to remove the valve and clean and clear the blockage and re-install. This is very infrequent.
Will just a valve be enough to stop rats entering my property?
Pestprooflondon offer the only humane extended guarantee for rodent control (12 months) within the UK
Rats are adaptive and highly motivated. Our job would be very easy if we could just fit a valve and this stops all entry. There are possibly 30-40 options below and above ground that a rat might enter a property, however, in 90% of cases they start in the drains.
Do Pestprooflondon just fit valves?
We can price to fit a valve only, however, there is no guarantee this will work. We would require a photo of your manhole and then can advise the cost. When attending we find secondary valves might be required (as is sometimes the case), we advise the additional cost to install.
